Islanders to win the Stanley Cup

Sports fans love making predictions and I'm no different. Every year I guess who is going to win the Stanley Cup after 60 or so games and every year, I am wrong. The law of averages indicates that I will be right someday, so I'm going to keep trying until that happens, using my proprietary method that takes the standings after a certain number of games and uses the season series to predict the results of the entire playoff.

Below are the standings after each team completed 60 games. Note that Minnesota takes the final wild card spot in the West and plays Nashville, while Winnipeg moves to the Pacific to take on Anaheim.

ATLANTIC PTS ROW
Montreal 83 33
Detroit 79 31
Tampa Bay 78 34
Boston 67 27
Florida 65 20
Ottawa 64 24
Toronto 53 21
Buffalo 39 10

METROPOLITAN PTS ROW
NY Rangers 82 35
NY Islanders 80 32
Pittsburgh 77 31
Washington 76 30
Philadelphia 63 23
New Jersey 59 21
Columbus 56 22
Carolina 53 19

CENTRAL PTS ROW
Nashville 87 34
St. Louis 80 31
Chicago 75 28
Winnipeg 70 24
Minnesota 69 29
Dallas 63 25
Colorado 63 19

PACIFIC PTS ROW
Anaheim 81 30
Vancouver 73 32
Los Angeles 70 28
Calgary 68 29
San Jose 68 28
Arizona 47 16
Edmonton 44 12

Based on the season series so far, here is how the playoffs would go:

Atlantic
Montreal over Boston (4-0)
Tampa Bay over Detroit (2-0)
Tampa Bay over Montreal (2-0)

Metropolitan
NY Rangers over Washington (1-0)
NY Islanders over Pittsburgh (3-1)
NY Islanders over NY Rangers (3-1)

Central
Nashville over Minnesota (2-0)
Chicago over St. Louis (2-1)
Chicago over Nashville (3-1)

Pacific
Anaheim over Winnipeg (3-0)
Los Angeles over Vancouver (2-0)
Anaheim over LA (2-0-1, both shootout wins)

Semifinals
NY Islanders over TB (2-1)
Chicago over Anaheim (2-1)

Finals
NY Islanders over Chicago (1-0, they played again on March 17 with Chicago winning 4-1, so this is no longer relevant).

So there you have it. Look for the Islanders to win the Stanley Cup a year before they move to Brooklyn. Although based on my past results, your best bet might be that the Islanders will most definitely not win the Cup.

Update: they did not. However, Chicago did win the Cup, beating Tampa Bay. So this method was pretty close after all.

Best,

Sean
