NFL Playoff Picture after Week 16

This past weekend saw one conference complete their playoff lineup, while the other endured a couple of surprises that make Week 17 compelling.

Washington wasn't even in the race back in Week 11 at 4-6, but they went 4-1 since then and are the NFC East champions and have the only definite spot with the fourth seed. Arizona can still take first overall with a win and a Carolina loss. Either way, the Panthers and Cardinals will be hosting games on the Divisional weekend. The third seed will be the winner of Sunday night's Packer-Viking game, while the loser will be 10-6. If Seattle beats Arizona to go to 10-6, then they take the 5th seed over Minnesota, but would lose the tiebreaker to Green Bay. Obviously if Seattle loses, they will take the 6th seed and play the NFC North winner. Finally, the Falcons were eliminated with Minnesota's win over the Giants and thus all six NFC teams are set, just the final positions need to be determined.

Last week, I said things weren't looking good for Jets fans, but Bill Belichick helped out a bit as did the Ravens, and now the Jets have the 6th seed and it is theirs to lose. Rex Ryan will be doing his best to make sure his former team suffers in Buffalo. Denver's Monday night OT win gives them the bye for now, while Cincinnati has the 3rd seed. That game also kept Indianapolis in the hunt for the AFC South title; but they need 9 games to swing their way. More obvious, Pittsburgh has to win and hope for some Buffalo magic to take that final seed.

Best,

Sean
