Sacramento is the capital city of California and naturally the top attraction is the State Capitol. I spent a couple of hours walking around the area and recommend it. There are guided tours available and a movie theater and museum are located in the building itself. Just to the north is the beautiful Capitol Park that is worth some time.
This statue is inside the main entrance. The words are shown below. Rather ironic given California's fiscal difficulties
I also went to Old Sacramento, a riverside attraction that tries to replicate what life was like when Sacramento was a booming gold rush town. Well, the picture below might not show the booming aspect, but you get the idea.
There are a number of museums here including the Sacramento History Museum and the California State Railroad Museum. Families will find a number of things here that should keep the kids busy for an afternoon.
I only had a few hours, so these two downtown areas are all I saw. There are a number of other attractions on the outskirts of town, including the Sacramento Zoo. The city might not be a typical tourist destination, but it is definitely worth visiting for a couple of days. Check it out when you stop in for a River Cats game!
Best,
Sean
